Science Club

Advisors: Ms. Chranowski and Mr Flosky

The O’Farrell Science Club offers students a chance to act globally on a local scale and experience a “hands on” appreciation of science and scientific study. Participating in such events as the Beach-to-Bay Cleanup and Earth Day, O’Farrell Science Club students see first hand the importance of maintaining a healthy environment as well as enriching their experience in different scientific fields of study. Committed to their goal of preserving natural areas in their community and to spreading the word about science, the O’Farrell Science Club excels in leadership and initiative within the scientific community at O’Farrell Community School. Science Club meets Mondays from 2:30 - 3:30 in Room 208.

Science Club News

O’Farrell Science Club is back again this year, bigger and better than ever. Science Club now has nearly 30 students involved in after school science activities.

On November 4th, we took our first Club field trip of the year to the 2007 Chem-Expo at Balboa Park. Twenty-one students, Ms. Chranowski, Mr. Buddy, and Mr. Flosky enjoyed learning chemistry from scientists and college chemistry students.

Our second trip will be equally exciting – the Body Exhibit. La Jolla Village Square is hosting a museum exhibit of the Human Body, which uses the real thing to teach Human Anatomy and Physiology. It is an awesome exhibit. Who knew learning was so much fun?

We are currently enrolled in a NASA study involving growing plants from seeds that have been in space in self-contained terrariums (or rather, mini-ecosystems). There are also students submitting projects and essays to NASA’s Cassini-Huygens “Scientist For-a-Day” project; and for the Coastal Commission’s annual Poetry & Art contest for the increased awareness of endangered species.

There is lots of Science going on and more to come – Stay Tuned!
